What is structured literacy?
Structured Literacy is an explicit, systematic approach to teaching literacy that focuses on essential skills like oral language, comprehension, fluency, phonics, and phonemic awareness.
This approach ensures that each element is taught sequentially and explicitly, empowering students to build strong foundational literacy skills across all year levels.
At Northern, we have integrated structured literacy throughout our curriculum, helping students make consistent progress by focusing on each of these core literacy components.
This comprehensive approach not only supports students in reading but also enhances their writing and spelling abilities.
Benefits of structured literacy
One of the most exciting observed outcomes is the improvement in students’ writing and spelling alongside their reading skills. Students learn to recognise patterns in language, make thoughtful spelling choices, and articulate the reasoning behind those choices. Students have shown marked growth in their handwriting, confidence, and ability to independently sound out and form words.
